Can AI help with homework and is that considered cheating?

Using AI as a tutor to understand topics or get explanations is increasingly accepted by schools, but using it to generate final answers without understanding them is considered cheating. The key is whether you're learning or just copying. Check your school's policy — most now have guidelines about what AI use is allowed.

AI for homework exists in a gray area that's changing fast. Using AI to explain a concept you don't understand, brainstorm ideas, or check your work is generally fine — many schools see this as a learning tool. However, having AI write your entire essay, solve all your math problems, or generate answers you then submit without understanding is cheating. Most schools are updating their policies now. Before using AI on homework, check your school's rules — they're either explicitly allowing it as a learning tool or banning it entirely.
