Voice typing or dictation not working on Android
Your keyboard is missing the microphone button or the app doesn't have permission to use your phone's microphone. Enable voice typing in keyboard settings and make sure the app has microphone permission.
Voice typing needs two things to work: the keyboard app must have voice input enabled, and the app you're typing in must have permission to use your microphone. If either one is missing or disabled, dictation stops working. We'll enable voice typing in your keyboard and grant microphone access.
- ✓Know which app you're trying to use voice typing in (Messages, Gmail, etc.)
- ✓Have a microphone on your phone (most Android phones have one built in)
- ✓Have internet connection — voice typing needs it to process your speech
Fix-IT-Bot will walk you through each step, just tap, no typing needed.
Skip, I just want a technicianCommon mistakes to avoid
- Forgetting to grant microphone permission to the app — the keyboard setting and the app permission are two separate things and both must be on.
- Trying voice typing without internet — it can't work if you're offline or on a very slow connection.
Signs you need professional help
- If voice typing is still not working after updating or reinstalling your keyboard and granting permissions, your microphone hardware can be broken or there's a system problem. Get in touch and we can test your microphone.
