Console overheating and shutting down in the middle of a game
Your console is overheating because its ventilation is blocked or it's in a hot space. Turn it off now, wait 15 minutes for it to cool down, then make sure the air vents aren't covered by anything and it's not in a closed cabinet. Move it to an open shelf with space on all sides and the problem will go away.
Consoles need air to flow around them or they overheat and automatically shut down to protect themselves. When the vents are blocked by dust, furniture, or being inside a closed space, the console can't get cool air in and hot air out. This causes it to shut down mid-game. Moving it to an open area with clear space around it and cleaning the vents fixes it completely.
- ✓Note where your console is currently located — you will need to move it to an open area
- ✓Have a soft-bristled brush or old toothbrush ready for cleaning the vents
- ✓Make sure you have at least 45 minutes available to test the console after making changes
Fix-IT-Bot will walk you through each step, just tap, no typing needed.
Skip, I just want a technicianCommon mistakes to avoid
- Moving the console but still putting it in a tight space. It needs real open space, not just out of the cabinet
- Cleaning the vents with a vacuum on high power. This can damage the delicate components, use low power or a soft brush
- Turning the console back on right after it shut down. Wait 15 minutes for it to cool before trying again
Signs you need professional help
- If you've moved the console to an open area with plenty of clearance, cleaned the vents, and it still shuts down mid-game, or if the console feels too hot to touch even with good ventilation, contact us for service — the internal cooling system will have failed.
