USB-C port on Mac not recognizing devices you plug in

The USB-C port isn't recognizing your device because the connector is dirty, the cable or adapter is faulty, or the port itself has stopped working. Unplug your device, clean out the port with compressed air, wipe the cable connector, and plug it back in firmly. This fixes it.

USB-C ports have tiny pins inside that make contact with the cable connector. When dust, lint, or debris blocks those pins, your Mac can't detect what's plugged in. The fastest fix is to clean the port and connector thoroughly. If that doesn't work, you have a faulty cable, adapter, or a port that needs repair.

⚡ Before you start
  • Check that you're plugging into a USB-C port and not a different type of port
  • Check that the USB-C cable is plugged in firmly and fully seated
  • Check if other USB-C devices work in the same port. If they do, your device or cable is the problem
