Your external hard drive isn't showing up on your Mac

The drive either isn't plugged in properly, the cable is damaged, or it needs to be mounted. Disconnect it completely, wait 10 seconds, and reconnect it firmly. If you see it in Disk Utility but not Finder, it just needs to be mounted by clicking the Mount button.

External drives need three things to show up on your Mac: a good cable connection, power for some drives, and a format your Mac can read. Sometimes the cable gets loose or the drive disconnects without unmounting properly. If the drive appears in Disk Utility but not Finder, it just needs to be mounted. We'll check the connection, mount the drive, and fix any format issues.
