Your Mac software update is stuck downloading or installing

A stuck update is caused by a slow internet connection or your Mac running out of storage space. Restart your Mac to try the update again, make sure you have at least 20 GB of free space, and confirm your internet is stable. This fixes it.

Wait a bit longer to see if the update continues

Large updates can appear stuck but are really just slow. Give the update more time before interrupting it.

Watch the percentage or progress bar to see if it moves, even slightly
If the progress bar changes at all, the update is working
Leave your Mac alone and let it continue — check if this resolves the issue
Check if the update installed successfully

Don't unplug your Mac during an update — always keep it plugged in to power until the update is complete
Don't close the update window or try to shut down your Mac during installation — let it finish
Don't try to download or stream video while a major update is downloading — it will slow everything down

Test your internet speed

Slow internet causes downloads to freeze.

Open a web browser on another device or computer
Go to speedtest.net and run a speed test
Look at the Download speed — it needs to be at least 5 Mbps
If speed is below 5 Mbps, restart your router or move your Mac closer to the WiFi router
Try the update again

Check how much free storage space your Mac has

Updates need plenty of free space to download and extract files.

Click the Apple menu and go to System Settings
Click General → Storage and look at the storage bar
You need at least 15–20 GB of free space for a major update
If your Mac is nearly full, delete large files or move them to external storage — check if the issue is resolved
Try the action again to check if the problem is resolved

Delete large files to free up storage space

If your Mac has less than 20 GB free, delete old files or move them to external storage.

Go to System Settings → General → Storage and look for suggestions to free up space
Click on categories like Downloads or Large Files and delete items you do not need
Empty the Trash after deleting files
Check the storage bar again and make sure you have freed up at least 5–10 GB

Close other apps that use internet or CPU

Other apps downloading or streaming can slow down your update.

Close streaming apps like YouTube, Netflix, or Spotify
Pause any large file uploads to Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox
Close web browsers with many tabs open
Try the update again

Make sure your Mac will not go to sleep during the update

If your Mac sleeps, the update pauses or gets interrupted.

While the update is downloading, go to System Settings → General → Sleep
Set the sleep timer to Never until the update finishes
Make sure your Mac is plugged in to power
Leave the update screen visible and do not close it — wait for it to complete and test the issue

Restart your Mac to clear out the stuck update

A restart clears temporary files and gives the update process a fresh start.

If the update is completely frozen, click the Restart button in the update window
If there is no Restart button, click the Apple menu and select Restart
Let your Mac fully shut down and boot back up
The update should automatically resume or show an Update Now prompt — wait for it to complete and test the issue

Try installing the update manually through System Settings

Going through System Settings gives you more control and clearer status.

Click the Apple menu and go to System Settings
Click General → Software Update
If an update is available, click Update Now or Update and Restart
Follow the prompts and do not interrupt the process — check if this resolves the issue

Check that the update has completed

Test that your Mac is running the new version.

After your Mac finishes restarting, click the Apple menu and go to About This Mac
Look at the macOS version number
It should show the newer version
Compare it to the version you were trying to update to — wait for it to complete and test the issue
