Your Mac software update is stuck downloading or installing

A stuck update is caused by a slow internet connection or your Mac running out of storage space. Restart your Mac to try the update again, make sure you have at least 20 GB of free space, and confirm your internet is stable. This fixes it.

macOS updates are large files that need to download and install. If your internet keeps dropping, your Mac runs out of space, or the installation gets interrupted, the update gets stuck. The quickest fix is to restart your Mac and try the update again. Make sure you have enough free storage space and a stable internet connection before you start.
