Router firmware update failed and now the router won't start

A failed firmware update puts the router in recovery mode. Unplug it for 30 seconds, plug it back in, and wait 5 minutes without touching anything. Most routers fix themselves.

Firmware is the software that runs your router. If it gets interrupted during an update. By a power cut, accidental unplugging, or network drop. The router gets stuck and won't start properly.

  • Make sure the power cable is firmly plugged into both the router and the wall outlet
  • Have the router in view so you can watch for any lights that come on, even dimly
  • Give the router space to cool down — wait at least 10 minutes before trying again if it feels warm
