WiFi drops out when the baby monitor is turned on

Your baby monitor and router are fighting for the same radio frequency. They're like two people shouting on the same channel. Most baby monitors use 2.4GHz, the same as your WiFi.

Baby monitors and WiFi routers both broadcast on the 2.4GHz frequency band. When they're near each other, they interfere with each other like two radio stations on the same dial. Your router tries to work while the monitor is broadcasting, and they jam each other up. Switching your router to 5GHz, moving the monitor away from the router, or changing your WiFi channel will fix this.

  • Know whether WiFi drops exactly when the baby monitor turns on and returns when it turns off
  • Locate the frequency label on your router — check the back or bottom to know if 5GHz is available
  • Measure the current distance between your baby monitor and router — note if they're close together
