Your router keeps restarting on its own

A router that keeps restarting is caused by a bad power cable, too much heat, or an automatic update. Start by trying a different power outlet and checking that the vents aren't blocked. If that doesn't work, try unplugging everything for 30 seconds and plugging it back in.

Constant rebooting means the router is powering itself down and back up repeatedly. This happens because of heat, a power problem, or a bug in the software. Fixing it is straightforward. Just moving the router, checking the power, or restarting once.

⚡ Before you start
  • Feel the router. If it's very hot to the touch, overheating is the problem
  • Make sure the power cable where it plugs into the wall is pushed in fully
  • Look around the router for dust or blocked vents that can trap heat
  • Note whether your router tried to update recently. That sometimes causes temporary rebooting
