Router lights are on but there's no internet
The router has power but can't reach the internet. The ethernet cable connecting the modem to the router is loose, or the modem itself has lost its connection. Start by checking the cable is plugged in firmly on both ends.
Your router can broadcast WiFi just fine, but it's not getting the actual internet signal from your modem. This means the physical connection between them is broken, or your modem has lost its connection to your ISP. The lights will tell you what's wrong.
- ✓Make sure the ethernet cable that connects the modem to the router is plugged in on both ends
- ✓Look at the router's internet light. It should be green or white, not red or orange
- ✓Confirm that the modem has internet. Look at whether its lights show a good connection
- ✓Try unplugging the ethernet cable and plugging it back in firmly
Fix-IT-Bot will walk you through each step, just tap, no typing needed.
Skip, I just want a technicianCommon mistakes to avoid
- Only restarting the router, not the modem. The modem has to reconnect to your ISP first
- Not checking the modem for internet before troubleshooting the router. Make sure the modem works first
- Assuming the cable is fine when it's actually damaged. Look carefully for bent pins or fraying
Signs you need professional help
- If the cable looks damaged and you're not sure how to replace it. If the modem shows no internet and you've already restarted it. If both devices are restarted and the modem has internet but the router still doesn't.
