WiFi is slow or drops out upstairs
The router is too far away or the signal can't reach through the floor. Move the router up to a central location (like a shelf near the stairs or upper floor hallway). This spreads signal evenly instead of having it all trapped downstairs.
WiFi signal gets weaker the farther it travels and the more walls and floors it goes through. When your router is in a basement or sitting on the floor, all the signal goes sideways through walls. Very little goes up to the next floor. Moving the router to a higher, more central spot sends signal in all directions including up.
- ✓Check where the router is right now. Is it on the floor, in a corner, or buried in a cabinet?
- ✓Go upstairs and look at the WiFi signal strength on your phone. How many bars?
- ✓Is the router in a central location or pushed to one side of your home?

Skip, I just want a technicianCommon mistakes to avoid
- Leaving the router on the floor or buried in a cabinet thinking it doesn't matter. Placement is the most important factor for WiFi range
- Putting the router in a corner and assuming it just doesn't reach upstairs when moving it to the center would fix it
- Not realizing that 5 GHz WiFi is available as an option for faster upstairs speeds
Signs you need professional help
- You've moved the router high and central and upstairs is still weak Multiple devices upstairs all have weak signal at the same time You need help choosing the right WiFi extender or mesh system for your home
