WiFi is slow or drops out upstairs

The router is too far away or the signal can't reach through the floor. Move the router up to a central location (like a shelf near the stairs or upper floor hallway). This spreads signal evenly instead of having it all trapped downstairs.

WiFi signal gets weaker the farther it travels and the more walls and floors it goes through. When your router is in a basement or sitting on the floor, all the signal goes sideways through walls. Very little goes up to the next floor. Moving the router to a higher, more central spot sends signal in all directions including up.

⚡ Before you start
  • Check where the router is right now. Is it on the floor, in a corner, or buried in a cabinet?
  • Go upstairs and look at the WiFi signal strength on your phone. How many bars?
  • Is the router in a central location or pushed to one side of your home?
