Smart home devices keep dropping off WiFi

Smart home devices need 2.4GHz WiFi, not 5GHz. If your router combines both bands into one network, it is steering your devices to 5GHz. Create separate WiFi networks for 2.4GHz and 5GHz, or disable band steering.

Most smart home devices only work on 2.4GHz WiFi, not 5GHz. When there are too many devices on 2.4GHz or when your router uses band steering (automatically moving devices between bands), smart devices get pushed to 5GHz and stop working. The fix is to separate the two bands into different WiFi networks so devices stay on 2.4GHz.

⚡ Before you start
  • During device setup, does the app ask for 2.4GHz or 5GHz? Always choose 2.4GHz
  • Does your router have one WiFi name for both bands or two separate names?
  • How many smart devices do you have? More than 25-30 on one 2.4GHz network causes congestion
