A smart home hub is a central device that manages Zigbee and Z-Wave devices. WiFi devices don't need a hub. If all your devices are WiFi-based, you don't need a hub.
Whether you need a hub depends on your devices. WiFi devices (most smart plugs and bulbs from mainstream brands) connect directly to your router and don't need a hub. Zigbee devices (Philips Hue, IKEA Tradfri) require a Zigbee hub. Z-Wave devices require a Z-Wave hub.
