Excel file won't open or shows error message

The Excel file can be corrupted or you do not have the right version of Excel installed. Try opening the file with Excel's repair tool or opening a backup copy. We will walk you through both.

Excel files stop opening when they become corrupted, when they were edited by a newer version of Excel, or when Excel is missing features it needs to read the file. We will try to repair the file, open a backup, or convert it to a format Excel can read.

  • Make sure you have a backup or older version of the file. If you do, try opening that instead.
  • Make sure the file is on your computer or on a shared network drive. Files on network drives are more prone to corruption.
  • Make sure the file size is very small (less than 1 KB). Small files can be empty or the actual file failed to save.
  • Make sure renaming the file helps. Sometimes Excel gets confused by the file extension.
