Zoom audio not working on your laptop
your microphone is muted in Zoom. Look at the bottom left of your Zoom window for a microphone icon with a line through it. Click it to unmute. If it's already unmuted, check your laptop's volume, make sure Zoom has permission to use the microphone, and restart the app.
Zoom needs three things to work: your microphone has to be turned on, Zoom has to have permission to use it, and the right microphone has to be selected in settings. If any of these is missing, you won't be able to talk or hear. The most common problem is accidentally muting yourself in Zoom. That's why we start there.
- ✓Look at the microphone icon in the bottom left of Zoom. Is it crossed out (muted) or showing normally (unmuted)?
- ✓Check your laptop's overall volume. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar (Windows) or click the volume in the top right (Mac)
- ✓Ask someone on the call if they can hear you at all. Sometimes the problem is only in one direction
Fix-IT-Bot will walk you through each step, just tap, no typing needed.
Skip, I just want a technicianCommon mistakes to avoid
- Restarting the laptop when unmuting Zoom would have fixed it in 5 seconds
- Not checking if the overall laptop volume is turned down. Zoom can be unmuted but the laptop itself can be muted
- Thinking the microphone is broken when Zoom just doesn't have permission to use it
Signs you need professional help
- You've unmuted Zoom, your laptop volume is up, and you still can't hear anything Zoom says it doesn't have permission but you can't find the settings to give it The microphone test in Zoom works but people on calls still can't hear you
