Your Chromebook won't turn on or is stuck on startup

Charge your Chromebook for 30 minutes first. A dead battery is the most common reason it won't start. If it still doesn't start, hold Power for 30 seconds to force a restart. If it says Chrome is recovering, let it finish.

Chromebooks won't start because the battery is completely dead. Plug it in and wait. If it still won't start after 30 minutes, a hard restart works. If it's stuck on a recovery screen, that's your Chromebook fixing itself — let it finish.

✓Is your Chromebook charged? Plug it in and wait 30 minutes. A completely dead battery looks like a broken Chromebook.
✓Do you see anything on the screen at all, even if frozen? A completely black screen can be a battery or display problem.

Charge your Chromebook completely

A completely dead battery is the number one reason Chromebooks won't start.

Plug your Chromebook into the charger that came with it
Make sure the charger is plugged into power, not just a USB connection
Look for a charging light on the charger or Chromebook
Wait at least 30-60 minutes before trying to turn it on
Press Power and wait for the screen to light up — then check if the issue is resolved

Don't Powerwash unless it's your last resort — it deletes all local files
Don't turn off your Chromebook while Chrome is recovering — let it finish

Do a hard restart by holding Power for 30 seconds

A hard restart forces everything to shut down and start fresh.

Hold down Power and don't let go for a full 30 seconds
Keep holding even if you see messages on the screen
After 30 seconds, let go and wait 10 seconds
Press Power again to turn your Chromebook back on
Wait for the login screen to appear — then check if the issue is resolved

Let Chrome OS finish recovering itself

If your screen says Chrome is recovering, your Chromebook is trying to fix itself. Don't interrupt it.

If you see Chrome is recovering or a spinning circle, this is normal automatic recovery
Don't turn it off or hold any buttons
Recovery takes 10-20 minutes depending on what's broken
Make sure it stays plugged in the whole time
Once it reboots to the login screen, the problem is fixed — check if this resolves the issue

Write down any error codes or messages you see

Error codes tell you exactly what's wrong.

If the boot screen shows an error, write down the exact code (like Error 0x31)
Take a photo of the error with your phone
Search online for the error code plus your Chromebook model
The error will tell you if it's a software or hardware problem — check if this resolves the issue

Check for indicator lights to see if hardware is working

Lights show if your Chromebook's core is running even if the screen is off.

Look for small LED lights on your Chromebook
Check the sides, bottom, or near the Power button
If you don't see any lights even with the charger plugged in, the battery or motherboard is likely broken
If you see a power light but the screen is black, the display is likely broken
If you see a light flashing during startup, the system is actually running but the display is off

Access Recovery mode to fix Chrome OS

Recovery mode lets you reinstall Chrome OS from a USB drive if normal startup won't work.

⏱ 5-10 minutes

Turn off your Chromebook completely (hold Power for 30 seconds if needed)
Hold down Escape and Refresh (the circular button above 3) at the same time
While holding both, press Power
Keep holding all three until you see a blue screen with a Chrome logo
Release the keys and insert your recovery USB drive when it tells you to — check if this resolves the issue

Create a recovery USB drive on another computer

You need this USB drive to fix your Chromebook if normal recovery doesn't work.

⏱ 10-15 minutes

Use another computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux) with internet
Open Chrome and search for Chromebook Recovery Utility
Download and install it
Insert a blank USB drive (at least 4GB)
Open the utility, select your Chromebook model, then click Create now

Powerwash your Chromebook (factory reset)

If your Chromebook boots to login but has problems, a Powerwash resets everything.

⏱ 5-10 minutes

On the login screen, press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R all at once
Click Reset when asked to confirm
Your Chromebook will restart and reset to factory settings
Note: This deletes all local files, but cloud files stay safe in your Google account — check if the issue is resolved
