Windows Defender won't turn on or stays disabled

When Defender won't turn on, it's usually because a group policy or another antivirus is blocking it. Disabling the policy or the other antivirus lets you turn Defender back on — this usually takes just a few minutes.

Windows Defender has built-in safety features to prevent conflicts with other antivirus programs. Sometimes a policy gets stuck or another antivirus is blocking Defender from running. We'll check what's blocking it and remove the block so you can turn Defender back on.
