Sound stopped working after a Windows update

A Windows update broke or disabled your audio driver. Check that sound isn't muted and your speakers are selected, then reinstall the audio driver if needed.

When sound stops after an update, Windows installed a new audio driver that doesn't work right, or the update disabled your speakers by accident. We'll check that audio is turned on, select the right speakers, and reinstall the driver.

  • Check that the volume isn't muted — look at the speaker icon in the bottom-right corner
  • Check that the right speaker or headphone device is selected
  • Check if you see a yellow warning icon in Device Manager
  • Be ready to restart your computer
