WiFi is connected but very slow on your Windows computer
When your computer is connected but slow while other devices are fast, your computer is on the wrong WiFi band, has power saving turned on, or is using an outdated driver. The problem is specific to your computer, not your whole network.
Your Windows computer can be on the slower 2.4 GHz band while your phone is on the faster 5 GHz band, or power saving mode is throttling your WiFi adapter. This is different from the whole network being slow. It's specific to your computer. Forcing 5 GHz preference and disabling power saving fixes it.
- ✓Run a speed test at speedtest.net on your computer and note the result
- ✓Run the same test on your phone using the same WiFi and compare
- ✓If your phone is significantly faster, the problem is on your computer
Fix-IT-Bot will walk you through each step, just tap, no typing needed.
Skip, I just want a technicianCommon mistakes to avoid
- Restarting the router expecting it to fix a computer-specific speed issue. If other devices are fast, the router is fine
- Upgrading your internet plan before confirming the problem isn't on your computer. You'll waste money on a faster plan you don't need
- Assuming full WiFi bars mean full speed. Signal strength and actual throughput are different measurements
Signs you need professional help
- If forcing 5 GHz and disabling power saving don't improve speed, or if driver updates fail or the driver isn't found automatically, give us a call and we'll help sort it out.
