Internet is fast but WiFi feels slow
The internet speed is fine. The problem is the wireless connection inside your home. Walls block the signal, channels get crowded with neighbor's networks, or your router is too far away.
A speed test measures the connection from your computer to the internet company's server. It doesn't measure whether you can actually get that speed on WiFi throughout your home. Signal weakens through walls, channels get congested by neighbors' networks, and WiFi standards on older routers can't deliver fast speeds to multiple devices. Upgrading your internet plan won't help if the wireless path inside your home is the bottleneck.
- ✓Run a speed test plugged directly into your router with an ethernet cable, then run another test on WiFi in the same room. Compare the two numbers
- ✓If ethernet is fast and WiFi is slow in the same spot, your wireless path is the bottleneck
- ✓Move closer to the router and test again. If speed improves significantly, signal strength is the issue

Skip, I just want a technicianCommon mistakes to avoid
- Upgrading the internet plan to fix slow WiFi. A faster plan delivered over weak WiFi still feels slow
- Assuming something is broken when wired speeds are good. The internet is fine, the wireless path needs work
- Placing the router in a cabinet or closet. Enclosed spaces block signal in all directions
Signs you need professional help
- If channel changes and router reposition don't improve speeds, or if your router is 4-5 years old and replacement has been considered, give us a call.
