WiFi randomly stops working

WiFi that drops randomly responds to something that changed. A new device, a firmware update, channel congestion from neighbors, or a router accumulating too much state. Identifying when drops happen tells you the cause.

When WiFi drops completely, all devices lose connection at once. This points to the router or internet provider, not a single device. If drops happen every evening, neighbors' networks are competing for the same channel. If drops are random at any time, a firmware bug or internet provider issue is likely.

⚡ Before you start
  • Track when drops happen for 24 hours. Evening drops point to channel congestion, random drops point to router or ISP issues
  • Check whether your phone also drops when your computer drops. If only the computer drops, the problem is the computer, not the router
  • Note the time of day each drop happens
