Apple Pay won't work at payment terminal even though it's set up
Either NFC is off on your phone, Face ID or Touch ID didn't authenticate, or the payment card in Apple Pay has an issue. Turning on NFC and re-authenticating usually fixes it in seconds.
Apple Pay needs NFC (wireless payment), face or fingerprint authentication, and an active payment card to work. If any of these are missing or disabled, the terminal won't accept it. We'll turn on NFC, check your cards, and test the payment.

Skip, I just want a technicianCommon mistakes to avoid
- Holding the phone too far from the terminal — NFC has a short range, usually 4 inches or less.
- Turning away from the terminal too quickly — wait for the beep or success message before moving your phone.
- Not realizing airplane mode turns off NFC automatically — leaving airplane mode on blocks Apple Pay completely.
Signs you need professional help
- If NFC is on, your card is valid, Face ID is working, but the terminal still rejects Apple Pay at multiple stores, contact your bank first to check your card status. If they confirm your card is fine, give us a call — there may be an issue with your iPhone's NFC hardware.
