iPhone screen goes black during phone calls and won't come back

Your iPhone has a proximity sensor that's supposed to turn the screen off during calls so your ear doesn't accidentally tap buttons. It's working as designed, but it's probably too sensitive or something is covering it. Try cleaning the small dot next to your front camera at the top of the phone. That's the sensor.

Your iPhone has a tiny sensor at the top of the screen that detects when you hold the phone to your ear. When it detects your face, it turns the screen off so your cheek doesn't accidentally tap buttons. This is normal behaviour, but if the sensor is dirty or something is covering it, it won't turn the screen back on when you move the phone away. Cleaning the sensor fixes this.
