Printer says cartridge is empty after you just installed it
The printer hasn't finished recognizing the new cartridge. Check for protective tape, clean the gold contact strip, and power cycle the printer. This fixes it for people in under 5 minutes.
When a new cartridge isn't recognized, the electrical connection between the cartridge and printer isn't complete. Three things cause this: protective tape still covering the contacts, dirty gold contact points, or the cartridge isn't fully clicked into place. Some printers also reject third-party cartridges by design.
- ✓Have the new cartridge removed from the printer so you can inspect it
- ✓Keep a clean, dry lint-free cloth handy to wipe contacts
- ✓Make sure you know whether your cartridge is genuine or third-party
Fix-IT-Bot will walk you through each step, just tap, no typing needed.
Skip, I just want a technicianCommon mistakes to avoid
- Missing one piece of protective tape — new cartridges have tape in multiple places and one is easy to overlook
- Forcing the cartridge into the slot too hard — if it doesn't slide smoothly, remove it and check for blockages instead
- Using only the power button to turn off instead of unplugging — a full unplug forces a complete power-down and fresh scan
Signs you need professional help
- If a genuine, in-date cartridge with clean contacts is fully seated and power-cycled but still shows empty, the ink level sensor inside the printer may be faulty — give us a call and we'll check it out.
