Portrait mode not available or blurring wrong areas on iPhone
Portrait mode needs good lighting and a clear subject to work. If it says 'Not Available', you need to be farther from the subject and have a face or object clearly in focus. If the blur is in wrong places, the phone is struggling to understand what is foreground and background. Move back a few feet and try again in better light.
Portrait mode uses two cameras working together to create the illusion of a shallow depth of field, where the background is blurred but your subject is sharp. This is a computational trick that requires the phone to understand what is a subject and what is background. When it doesn't work, the phone either cannot find a clear subject or is confused about what should be blurred.
- ✓Check that your iPhone has dual cameras — older single-camera iPhones do not have Portrait mode
- ✓Check the lighting in your location — Portrait mode needs good light to work well
- ✓Check that you are not too close to the subject — you need to be at least 2 feet away
- ✓Check that you have a clear face or object in the frame — blurry or obscured subjects confuse the depth sensor
