USB device not recognized no matter which port you plug it into
Your device's driver software — the instructions that tell your computer how to use it — is either missing or broken. Start by unplugging your device, turning your computer off completely, turning it back on, and then plugging your device in fresh. That fixes it.
Every USB device needs a driver. Software that tells your computer how to talk to it. If the driver is missing, broken, or out of date, your computer acts like your device doesn't exist. We'll start with a fresh restart to reset the connection, then check if your computer can find the driver on its own. If that doesn't work, we'll reinstall it.
- ✓Have a different USB cable available to test with, if you can find one
- ✓Know the name or model number of your USB accessory — check the package or the label on it
- ✓Make sure your computer is fully powered and responsive
Fix-IT-Bot will walk you through each step, just tap, no typing needed.
Skip, I just want a technicianCommon mistakes to avoid
- Trying the same port over and over instead of testing different ones. One bad port doesn't mean all ports are bad
- Assuming the cable is fine because it looks okay. Cables can be broken inside without showing damage outside
- Not restarting the computer all the way. Sleep mode doesn't reset driver issues, only a full restart does
- Downloading a driver for the wrong operating system — Windows 64-bit and 32-bit versions need different drivers
